Huatulco, MX!

🌴✈️ UPCOMING TRIP TO MX!

Secrets Huatulco on the Pacific Coast

We’ve got another Mexico trip on deck — and this one feels just right.

Destination?
Secrets Huatulco Resort & Spa on Mexico’s Pacific Coast.

Flights are booked. Bags will be light. Expectations are high.  Peso's in Hand!

And this one is shaping up to be the perfect reset trip.

Why Huatulco?

Compared to Cancun or Riviera Maya, Huatulco is a completely different vibe.

Instead of a long hotel strip and high-energy tourism, Huatulco sits along a protected bay system:

  • 9 bays

  • 36 beaches

  • Mountain-meets-ocean views

  • Crystal-clear water

  • Almost no seaweed issues

  • And unreal Pacific sunsets

You trade Caribbean sunrise for golden-hour coastal drama — and honestly, that’s a trade we’re happy to make.

The Resort: Secrets Huatulco

Secrets Huatulco is one of those underrated gems.  It's been on my radar for almost a year now.  Snagged a Prefered Junior Suite Ocean Front King.  But, will we get upgraded yet higher?  We will find out!

It’s:

  • Adults-only

  • All-inclusive

  • Smaller and more intimate

  • Easy to navigate

  • Known for warm, consistent service

  • Relaxed instead of party-heavy

Compared to some mega-resorts in Cancun, this one feels more personal and less mass-production.

That’s exactly what we’re after this time.

This isn’t a party trip.  Off to Explore and Kick Back.

The Travel Plan

We’re flying American Airlines into HUX (Huatulco International).  These flights can be hard to come by, with Non Stops only once a day and can be sparse about 1/2 the year.

Pro tip:
Huatulco’s airport is small and refreshingly easy.

  • Quick customs

  • Short lines

  • About 20–25 minutes to the resort

No 90-minute transfer.
No airport chaos.

Just smooth in, smooth out.

The Beach Situation

Pacific Coast resorts sometimes get a reputation for rough surf — but Huatulco sits in Tangolunda Bay, which is protected.

That means:

  • Swimmable water most of the year

  • Calm conditions

  • Snorkeling right off the beach

  • No sargassum roulette (yay!)

That’s a huge win.

The Atmosphere

Huatulco tends to attract:

  • Couples

  • 35+ crowd (guess I'm good to go... lol)

  • Relaxation-focused travelers

  • Repeat Mexico visitors

More sunset cocktails and slow mornings (what I'm talking about)

If Cancun is high-energy social luxury…
Huatulco is low-key coastal reset.

Sunset Factor (Underrated)

Pacific-facing properties mean:

  • Direct sunset views

  • Golden-hour pool lighting

  • Dramatic skies

  • That end-of-day glow you just don’t get on the Caribbean side

This alone makes the destination feel different.

Beyond the Resort

Huatulco offers more “real Mexico” experiences:

  • Coffee plantation tours

  • Mezcal tastings

  • Waterfall excursions

  • Boat tours across multiple bays

  • Local fishing villages

It’s culturally richer and far less commercial than major tourist hubs.

What This Trip Is Really About

This one isn’t about flashy new architecture or rooftop party scenes.

It’s about:

  • Peace

  • Ocean swimming

  • Slow mornings

  • Sunset views

  • Good food

  • Strong margaritas

Sometimes the best trips aren’t about the biggest destination — they’re about the right vibe at the right time.

And right now?

Huatulco feels exactly right.

🇲🇽🌅 Full recap coming after we’re back.

UPDATED 23 FEB

✅ Huatulco Airport (HUX) — Operating Status Today

Here’s the most up-to-date picture of Bahías de Huatulco International Airport (HUX):

✈️ Flight Activity

  • Live flight tracking and arrival/departure boards show scheduled flights arriving and departing normally at Huatulco today. You can see multiple flights listed as scheduled and in-air from major origins like Mexico City, Guadalajara, Dallas, Vancouver, and more, indicating that the airport is open and operational.

  • Real-time flight pages for HUX show arrivals and departures in progress without any indication of a full airport closure.

📍 Operational Context

  • HUX is an international airport serving both domestic and international flights, and it remains open with flights currently flying to and from the airport.

  • The airport’s official status (as of today) shows no widespread closures or shutdowns reported in flight tracker data.

⚠️ Security & Local Conditions

  • Huatulco (Oaxaca) is not currently included in the high-alert regions tied to recent cartel violence events that have affected parts of western Mexico such as Jalisco and Guanajuato. Oaxaca and the Huatulco region have not been widely reported in official advisories as areas with violence-related travel disruptions.
(Major advisory warnings from foreign governments around cartel violence have focused on states like Jalisco, Michoacán, Guerrero, Tamaulipas, and Quintana Roo — but not Oaxaca/Huatulco as a violence hotspot at this time.)
