Iron Butt!

Iron Butt .....  a term I'd heard for many years though not always used in the correct context.   To me it'd always simply meant doing a 1000 mile trip on a bike.  At the same time, it sounded absurd to me.  I don't like doing 500 miles in my cage, much less 1000 in one pop.   Hell, until I rode my bike to Sturgis in '11, I'd never done even 500 in one day on a bike. However back in '11 I did 600 on day one, rolling through 110 deg heat; I thought that was crazy.  Then a few years later, 700+ miles to MN.  As the mileage numbers creep up, you start pushing a little harder. The bar is raised.   Hell, on two MN trips I felt I could have done the trip of 975 miles in one day but stopped once due to a bike break down and the other, due to critters at night possibilities. In '15 I found myself doing 1150 miles each way to/from Sturgis, 20 hours each.  Now in all fairness ...  that 1150 wasn't planned out either way.... and it hurt.   Anyone that thinks it

Rumbling in the night....

Over the years, I've found nothing more annoying.. than guys  .. people.. that snore.  From my military days on deployments...   to camping trips.. .. or .. just your buddy that falls out on a long night .. or watching a movie, and starts sawing logs.  I remember visiting family where that would happen... you're watching a movie.. everyone is around.. and .. that one person falls asleep and .. the snoring begins.. you crank up the volume, pretend all is good..and... I'm annoyed. Well, about 10 years ago.. I became part of the problem. I attribute it to my body weight (okay .. maybe age too .. ) ..  About 12 years ago, I tipped 300lbs on the scale.   I've gone up and down 10 or 15 since that year.. but today .. I'm still about .. 300lbs.  And I snore.   In the early days, I'd wake myself up all night.  I'd pop open the eyes thinking WTF was that?  Then .. back to sleep .. and  .. repeat.   Then I went through a period where I sort of slept through it, but j

The Equia black hole....

Man .. I've tried to stay out of this.  But as always, my phone is lit up with the latest.  Today .. .texts.. emails.. phone calls.  Johnny Anderson is back in play and making headway spreading the word to others and..  to me (kudos!). It's a real world drama unfolding that many folks want to see through to the end.  The party is over. The question is simply.. how far will this go? I've posted since early '17 on the mess that has been going on up north in MN.  Out of frustration, I posted my questions on the Riders Group up there that WAS (they want zero to do with him today) attached to a dealership that is now out of business.  I questioned the finances of a charity that I'd contributed to and supported the previous five years.   My questioning was reversed and flipped into a social media spectacle on Equia's Facebook page and groups and pages that he controlled. All in a move to redirect blame and responsibility. The dealership is gone.  Apparently the ho

How to tie down a bike ...

I've been meaning to post on this subject for months...   I'd started this ....   hell...  late last year, but never finished it up.   Over the last few decades, I've moved bikes in the back of my truck.....   open trailers ( like in the pic ) ..  back of Toy Haulers and .. enclosed trailers.  Over the years, I've had a couple of bikes come loose.  This can be attributed to not having a solid wheel chock in place and even using crappy straps. One thing that always comes up is .. 'where to connect the straps?".   This is a legit problem / question.  Some bikes like the Chieftain in the pic below, have a fairing that can get in the way.   My HD Roadglide has the same issue. There there is the concern of strapping it down too tight and screwing up the fork seals from over compressing the shocks. In the early days, I overlooked strapping down the back and had a bike or two shift on me.  I soon started strapping the rear wheel down, but this is't the b

Headed out to the Garage yesterday ... was feeling the need for some speed!   Need to head over to see my sis for a quick visit, and the best way is via 2 lane roads .. the long way.  Problem is... as I get ready to back out the Ninja .. i notice the tags are expired.  Crap!  Right next to it.. the Triumph Rocket 3.  WTF...   it's plate's look good .. so I'm backing it out. Onward to Lone Oak to top off the tank then I'm headed out.  This bike is a Torque/HP monster.   As soon as I get on the 2 laner headed out of town, I'm refreshing myself with the power band.  First gear is good for at least 55mph... second gear I'm hitting 85mph as I shift....  and I haven't found the rev limiter.  Third gear I'm in triple digits.. but ..   I don't have a brain bucket on ... not dressed for the slide... so .. I back out of it.  Half a dozen times I'll hit the triple digit mark playing around.  My speedo says 110 at one point, but my app I'm using says I

HD beware ...Big Johnson is here

Buddy of mine posted this earlier today.... Looks like Harley is going to have some North American competition: At a press conference late Monday, the CEO of Johnson Marine, makers of Johnson outboard marine engines and other recreational equipment, unveiled a new line of heavyweight cruiser style motorcycles designed to compete head to head with industry leader Harley-Davidson.  Peter Long, Johnson brands marketing manager said, "We have studied the market and determined that Harley, while highly successful, has narrowly missed the mark when targeting motorcycle buyers". Long added, "We, at Johnson, are convinced our product hits the target dead center and promises to draw sales away from Harley-Davidson in a way no other motorcycle has been able to accomplish". The new line of bikes, marketed under the name 'Big Johnson Motorcycles', will, according to Long, deliver what Harley has only promised. "Our research show that this, "Big Johnson&quo
