Too Damned Early! |
|
For Four years now, Indians ( motorcycles ) have been making their way to Fredericksburg in the Texas Hill Country for an extended weekend event. I had intentions of attending the first and second, but due to a last minute conflict of events, I had to cancel both times. Last year it wasn't on my radar; this year it was and was truly worth the trip.
Wednesday morning at 0630 hrs Jim and I threw our legs over the bikes and headed SW in the chilly damp morning . It started out at 57 deg, and finally got into the 60s for us later that day. We met up with Michael and his bride Teri in Lampasas, and they escorted to the Rolling Thunder Road House where we finally got to meet Roger Chan , owner of the place.

After some grub ( Grilled Cheeseburgers with bacon were decadent!) , we headed West towards Fredericksburg . When we pulled into the Sunset Inn, we'd pushed past the 400 mile mark , and I was beat . You know what that means .. head to town for some cold ones and more grub! Pulled into the Local Brewery and problem solved!

Alan out front leading the pack on Day 2 |

Next morning, we began the fun. The Hill Country has some of the best riding in the country, and unbelievable rugged beauty. I intentionally stayed away from the big group attending the rally; I've gotten where I don't like riding with people I don't' know whose abilities may not be up to the task. On this day , we had a small group of riders ( 5 bikes ) and we rode ... hard and fast! We hit roads I've never been on and visited a few spots that I can't wait to go back to!

A Slice of Mexico, in the middle of Nowhere! |
|
All day, we were scooting down 2 laners and 1 lane Ranch Roads at lets say ..... high speeds ... which was a total rush. Headed out , we first slid down Hwy 16 from Kerrville to Bandera which is a must for anyone. A lot of sweeps and a few ultra tight corners will wake you up, in preparation for what awaits you.

At Bandera , we whetted our whistles then the real riding began. We did several stops along that way, ending up at Luckenbach for a few colds ones, then .. back to the motel .. then dinner .. back to motel .. then drinks. We repeated this process day after day .... Don't fix it , if it ain't broke?

Jumping to Saturday, we headed to ... the Three Sisters. This is Texas' version of the "Tail of Dragon'. You know you're up for some fun when you see the signs at multiple points giving you a death toll of motorcycle riders so far that year. If this doesn't make you pucker... it should.

Shady Tree - Day 2
|
|
We were scraping and hauling ass, so much so that we came up on other groups 1/2 dozen times... Once we would finally find a passing point or the amateurs moved aside, we kicked it back up again. Nothing but fun and good times!

Getting ready for the third Sister! |
Overall, excellent time. Crazy part is, I never rode or hung out with the 'large group' there. We had a select few come over to us and ride along. I'd heard several bikes went down in the group over the weekend. One was a ugly one with the wife injured and the husband in the hospital in bad shape. I don't know any of the specifics, but found myself glad I'd made the decision to stick with a small group.

Leaving the Second Sister.. |
|
Next year, I most likely won't attend due to the fact we may be moving the IIRA Reunion from Durango CO to the Texas Hill Country for a year or so. Now that ...... I'll attend all day long!
